• For the past few days, the town hall of Nice has had two strips of new coating installed, large pebbles molded in concrete, to "make crossing the tram tracks, on avenue Jean-Médecin, "unattractive and complicated" .

  • The aim is to enforce the ban on two-wheelers on this axis where they were involved in 24 accidents which led to a stoppage of tram traffic for more than ten minutes last year.

  • “It's an experiment that we're going to carry out for three months.

And, if it is conclusive, we will be able to install up to 27 of them on the single route of line 1 of the tramway.

And maybe even beyond, ”explained the deputy mayor Gaël Nofri.

With his bike, Adam is used to using the tramway tracks on Avenue Jean-Médecin.

“Because it goes faster.

“But this Wednesday morning, at the corner of boulevard Victor-Hugo, the municipal police stationed there forced this Niçois to set foot on the ground.

Two-wheelers are prohibited from driving on this axis and the town hall has just drawn up a new plan so that it is much better respected.

And therefore to try to reduce the number of accidents recorded.

For the past few days, she has had two 5 m long strips of new coating installed, large pebbles molded in concrete, to "make the crossing unattractive and complicated".

Instead of bitumen, smooth and comfortable.

“The platform was built at a time when the problem of bicycles and scooters was not the same.

It must be adapted, ”explained Gaël Nofri, the deputy mayor for traffic, on the spot.

“It's an experiment that we're going to carry out for three months.

And, if it is conclusive, we will be able to install up to 27 of them on the single route of line 1 of the tramway.

And maybe even beyond, ”also added the elected official, who also wore his cap as president of the Lignes d’Azur management.

Eight injury accidents last year

Because if, to the chagrin of the municipality, a thousand users of two-wheelers still circulate daily on the tracks dedicated to the oars, it is not without consequences for the public transport network.

According to the elected official, last year, on avenue Jean-Médecin, 24 accidents involving two-wheelers led to a stoppage of tram traffic for at least ten minutes.

“Without counting on the others and also on the eight bodily accidents, including potentially very serious ones, underlines the chosen one.

And then, these prohibited crossings often force the trains to slow down with significant economic consequences.

»

The ban would however be all the easier to respect according to the elected official, as the creation of "secure north-south cycle paths" has changed the situation.

“But it was much more practical to pass on Jean-Médecin”, storms Adam, even if he “understands” the initiative of the town hall “to deal with those who are not careful”.

Other vehicles will be video ticketed

Beyond the bicycles and scooters, it is also the 250 motorized vehicles which frequent every day, also in violation, the tram tracks on the avenue that the town hall has decided to put in its sights.

The start of automatic video reporting has just been announced on this subject.

The city also asked the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes to install three fire radars on three perpendiculars to Jean-Médecin, where "200 infractions" would be "daily recorded", according to Gaël Nofri.
