The

Ministry of Health

of

Castilla y León

, in the hands of the PP, has qualified Vox, a partner of the regional government, to ensure that the protocol that is applied in the autonomous community for the assistance of pregnant women remains the same as it was until now .

Health has thus corrected the announcement that Juan García-Gallardo, vice president of the regional Executive and belonging to Vox, who assured that the Board was going to implement new "pro-life" measures for pregnant women that included one more ultrasound in the first trimester of pregnancy so that the woman can hear the fetal heartbeat and a 4D echo before aborting, in addition to a referral to mental health

in cases of pregnant women who require it

.

He has learned about the change in protocol in the care of pregnant women in Castilla y León through the press.

Javier Martínez-Guisasola, president of the Spanish Society of Gynecology (SEGO) in Castilla y León

, acknowledges that his medical society has not been consulted to introduce the changes announced this Thursday by the vice president of the Board, Juan García-Gallardo.

"We have not been consulted at all as a scientific society. I do not know what advisers they have had for this new protocol."

From the point of view of medical practice and scientific knowledge,

Martínez-Guisasola

points out that "current protocols, including that of the

International Ultrasound Society

-which has just been updated this January- recommend that the first systematized ultrasound be done in week 12 of gestation. If an ultrasound is done before, at week 6, 8 or 9, it should be properly protocolized and, in that case, there is no indication to put on sound. That is, it should not be a Doppler ultrasound in which the fetal heartbeat is heard, as

there is no evidence that there is no damage to the fetal heart."

Regarding the 4D ultrasound, the specialist acknowledges that "it does not contribute anything to what is included in the routine, black and white ultrasound, which is already being done."

Pending the clear regulation that should come out of the Ministry of Health where the details of these changes are collected

, the first intention announced by the vice president was to force the doctor to perform the third ultrasound of the third trimester to listen to the fetal heartbeat.

.

If this scenario becomes a reality, the president of the gynecologists in Castilla y León has a clear answer: "If they are going to force us to put the heartbeat below the twelfth week of gestation, while the health guides tell us that it is not recommended, unless it is by law, we should not do it. There are guidelines that suggest that it can be dangerous. And, if we are asked to do a 4D echo in week eight, nine or six, when a 4D echo does not work to contribute anything, because it will have to be debated. These indications must have the endorsement of scientific societies".

Objection

In any case, the professional opens the door to the doctor's objection.

"It is possible to object to doing a Doppler ultrasound on a nine-week-old heart for scientific reasons, because it can cause damage to the fetus, because the doctor's Hippocratic oath says that the first thing is to do no harm.

No one in their right mind can force us doctors to do tests or make decisions or attitudes that are not clear that they are not innocuous".

In relation to care for women who wish to abort, the president of the gynecologists and obstetricians of Castilla y León assures that his community is complying with the

Law on sexual and reproductive health and the voluntary interruption of pregnancy

: "We make a ultrasound when the woman, by virtue of article 14 of the law, decides to voluntarily interrupt the pregnancy. Thus we confirm that the fetus is alive and in what week of gestation it is and we start the entire therapeutic protocol".

The referral to mental health of the woman who has aborted or intends to do so "is already done, when it is needed."

"The vast majority of people are aware of the decisions they make. After making the decision to terminate the pregnancy, some women

may come more or less worried, anxious, but systematically there is no indication

to send a woman who is going to interrupt pregnancy to the psychologist".

Martínez-Guisasola

speaks out against the register of objectors that includes the reform of the abortion law and that is in an advanced parliamentary process.

"Personally, I think it's a blacklist. I think you shouldn't single out anyone, neither the professional who is against abortion nor the one who is in favor of it."
