Pupils and parents can apply for gender-neutral certificates at Berlin schools in the future.

A spokesman for the Berlin Senate Education Administration confirmed reports from several media on Thursday.

In future, it will be possible in the texts of the certificates to only use the first name of the respective student instead of the pronouns "he" and "she".

By the summer holidays, there should be freedom of choice for pronouns in school reports at Berlin schools.

"If there is a desire to be addressed neutrally or by name in relation to gender identity, teachers will respect this," said the spokesman.

Unless otherwise requested, the students would usually continue to be titled "she" or "he".

The innovation is a development that is already common practice in many areas of public life, the spokesman explained.
