The Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archeology announced on January 12 that the green brick land purchase coupons unearthed from a Yuan Dynasty tomb in Hongdong, Shanxi Province proved the first recorded magnitude 8 earthquake in China.

Previously, archaeologists discovered a batch of Yuan Dynasty tombs.

Among them, M33 is an octagonal brick-chambered tomb with imitation wood structure and a clear date.

From the contents of the unearthed land purchase certificate, it can be known that the tomb was built in the eleventh year of Yuan Huizong to Zhengzheng (1351 A.D.).

The tomb was damaged due to the earthquake. Later generations built this new tomb, and the remains of the original damaged tomb were relocated here, thus forming a tomb for multiple people of the same clan.

"Yuan History Five Elements Records" contains: "In August of the seventh year, there was an earthquake, especially in Taiyuan and Pingyang. There were hundreds of thousands of houses for bad officials and people." According to historical records, this earthquake is the first magnitude 8 earthquake recorded in Chinese history. earthquake.

Archaeologists speculate that the purchase of land coupons is related to the magnitude 8 earthquake that occurred in Hongdong in the seventh year of Yuan Dade (September 25, 1303 AD).
