For Tim Burton, filming
Batman
in 1989 was a double challenge.
Not only did he have to direct the biggest superhero movie of the 1980s despite his lack of experience, he also had to direct Jack Nicholson, who had been given the role of the Joker.
Because even if the current was going very well with the star of
The Shining
, there was a real communication problem!
“Jack expressed himself in a very abstract way”, remembered the filmmaker during an interview granted to
Empire
and relayed by the NME.
"So he was telling me things and I was like, 'Yes, of course.'
And then I would walk up to someone and say, 'Damn, what was he talking about?' So we would communicate weirdly: in a non-linear way, without a direct connection.
But it was very clear to me.
I just felt like we had really good caveman communication.

Especially since Jack Nicholson had been very protective of Tim Burton.
“I really felt deeply supported by him, and without saying a word he gave me the confidence to do what I needed to do.
And the fact that he's supporting me resonated a lot with the studio,” he continued.
“It got me through it all.
It gave me strength.
When you've shot a superhero movie with Jack Nicholson, you can do anything afterwards!
