  • Blocked ears, these are the causes and this is what you have to do (and what not)

  • Ophthalmology Why do our eyes cry in winter?

They appear from one day to the next and without warning.

The alarm goes off, you go to the kitchen, you peel an orange and as soon as you put it in your mouth the pain comes.

A sore has just appeared in your mouth and you have no idea how it got there, but for the next few days you will suffer from it every time you eat something or even talk.

If this scene is familiar to you too, don't worry, they are much more common than you think and, luckily, the vast majority are harmless.

What are mouth sores?

Its real name is

aphthous ulcer or oral thrush

, and they are nothing more than small superficial lesions that appear on the mucosa of the mouth or on the gums, like small wounds inside the mouth.

They are very easy to identify, since when we look in a mirror we will see a white or yellowish lesion, oval in shape and with a reddish border.

Are they very frequent?

Much.

They are

one of the most widespread oral health problems

, and it is estimated that approximately half of the Spanish population has suffered from them at some point in their lives.

Once or even several times.

Are they contagious?

No. Canker sores can occur for a number of reasons, but none of them is person-to-person transmission.

In that sense we can be calm.

Why do they appear?

There are various reasons that can trigger its appearance, even a combination of several of them.

The most common are:

-

Small wounds in the mouth

caused by excessive brushing of the teeth that ends up damaging the gums, a blow, accidentally biting our cheek or by rubbing against a broken tooth or poorly adapted orthodontics.

In all these cases they are known as traumatic canker sores.

-Emotional

stress

can also lead to its appearance.

-

Hormonal changes such

as those that occur during the menstrual cycle.

-Due to a

deficiency of iron or vitamins such as B12

.

-As a frequent side effect in people who are receiving cancer treatment.

What symptoms do they cause?

The most common and practically the only one is

pain.

Depending on where in the mouth it has appeared, it will be more or less intense.

The positive part is that it will disappear as the days go by.

How do mouth sores heal?

Waiting for the days to pass.

The vast majority of canker sores will disappear on their own

in about ten or twelve days without us having to apply any treatment for it.

You just have to be patient.

And the products for them that they advertise on television?

Don't they cure them?

Those products

are not actually going to cure canker sores or make them go away sooner

, but they are going to treat the symptoms that cause us.

They will help us to make the pain disappear.

These are usually products such as protective gels that are applied directly to the ulcer or rinses with anesthetics or chlorhexidine.

If I have them, should I go to the doctor or dentist?

At first it is not necessary, as I said, the vast majority disappear on their own in one or two weeks.

But

if after 15 or 20 days those sores have not disappeared or have even gotten worse, we should go to a specialist

.

It is likely that we have to look for the cause that originates them and treat it, in order to make them disappear.
