First grader shoots teacher in Virginia

The American police announced that a 6-year-old boy opened fire inside an elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, USA, injuring a teacher.

Police Chief Steve Drew said the injury to the teacher, who is in her 30s, posed a threat to her life, although she showed some improvement in hospital.

Police described the incident as a "brawl" in the first-row room, which resulted in one shot being fired.

"This was not an accidental shooting," Steve Drew said. "I want to know where that firearm came from."

He added that the child was detained.

No students were injured in the accident.

Headmaster George Parker said he was "shocked" and "disappointed" at the teachers' inability to prevent firearms from entering schools.

"We need weapons not to get into the hands of our youth," Parker said. "I can't control access to weapons.

Teachers cannot control access to weapons.

He added that all schools are equipped with metal detectors but they were not switched on at Rechnik Primary School on Friday.
