Spanish high-altitude climber Alex Txikon and his Nepalese companions Chhepal Sherpa, Pasang Norbu Sherpa, Lama Sherpa, Gelu Sherpa, Maila Sherpa and Gamjie Babu Sherpa reached the summit of Manaslu (8163 meters) in Nepal on Friday.

For Txikon it was the second winter ascent of an eight-thousander after Nanga Parbat (8125 meters) in 2016.

The meteorologist Karl Gabl had forecast Friday as the perfect summit day.

When the mountaineers left the base camp on Wednesday, a storm was raging at the summit level with speeds of around 180 kilometers per hour. On Friday there were only wind speeds of around 30 kilometers per hour and temperatures around minus 30 degrees.

While mountaineers had no chance of climbing the summit in previous winters due to large amounts of snow, this winter has so far been unusually low in precipitation.

It was only the second ascent of the eighth highest mountain in the world in winter.

Poles Maciej Berbeka and Ryszard Gajewski reached the summit in January 1984.
