- In 1965, de Gaulle demanded that US President Lyndon Johnson exchange $1.5 billion in cash from French reserves for gold;
- in 1966, the French government published a memorandum on withdrawal from NATO military structures, since de Gaulle considered the confrontation between the North Atlantic Alliance and the Warsaw Pact to be a false path, in contrast to the creation of "a united Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals."
Can such demarches be imagined today?
No.
If the main idea of Gaullism is the priority of national interests over everything else, then the main idea of modern French power is the priority of "general European" interests and values over national ones.
Pierre de Gaulle also has a lot of complaints about "European values".
In his opinion, they are built on the denial of family, tradition and religion, as well as their replacement by a "culture of short-term personal satisfaction."
