A 1-year-old boy died and a 2-year-old girl fell unconscious in critical condition when a truck coming from behind collided with a light passenger car that had stopped on a national highway in Kakogawa City, Hyogo Prefecture.
Police have arrested the truck driver on suspicion of negligent driving injury and are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

The mini passenger car was driven by Sayuri Kobayashi (24) from Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, and Ichiri Kano (1), who was in the car, hit her head hard and died. He is unconscious and in critical condition with broken ribs.
Ms. Kobayashi said she was out of the car to report that she had hit a guardrail and suffered minor injuries.
The three were on their way back from their parents' home in Mie Prefecture to their home in Okayama Prefecture.
Police arrested Fumiya Awai (65), who was driving the truck, on the spot on suspicion of negligent driving injury.
