A French actor is being investigated by police after he was accused of two counts of rape and one count of assaulting his partner.

This raised concerns that protests would break out during the gala, which is held in February.

The actor has been seen as a potential award winner in the Newcomer of the Year category.

The actor himself denies the crime.

As recently as 2020, protests erupted at the César Gala after Roman Polanski, convicted of child rape in the 1970s, won the award in the Best Director category.

Now the César Academy states in a press release that anyone who could potentially be sentenced to prison for violent crimes of a sexual or sexist nature will be excluded from attending this year's ceremony.

On the other hand, it is unclear whether these people can win a prize at this year's gala, according to several media.

It is still being discussed within the academy whether people suspected of or convicted of sexual crimes should also be completely excluded from future nominations and awards.

An announcement will be made in the coming weeks.
