A rather calm night, in terms of security.

“There was no notable incident yesterday in all of France,” said Gérald Darmanin on Sunday morning, from Mayotte where he is visiting for two days.

The Minister of the Interior welcomed the "very big effort made by the Ministry of the Interior, particularly in Île-de-France" with the mobilization of 90,000 police and gendarmes for the evening and night of Saint- Sylvester.

In Paris, between one and two million people “if we take a fairly wide perimeter” gathered on the Champs-Élysées, according to Gérald Darmanin.

The crowd had come to watch a fireworks display, the first of its kind since the transition to 2020. "It went as well as possible," said the minister.

Firmness tips applied

Gérald Darmanin announced 500 arrests at the national level, in particular of people "who had mortars" or "who wanted to set fire to cars".

In addition, 20% fewer cars than last year would have been burned thanks to the proper application by the prefects of "advice of firmness", according to the minister.
