It was a year of bad news: In the pandemic, there was hope of starting a new life afterwards.

But war, energy crisis and climate catastrophe set new priorities.

And yet other events also moved us in 2022 - we put them together chronologically here.

And our photo editors describe their photos of the year.

The photographer captures 27-year-old Lena, lost in thought, during her short break from work, in the middle of a garbage dump on the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

She eats a piece of bread previously found in the trash.

In the background we can see vultures, other birds of prey and plumes of waste gas.

The mother of three children works hard every day in these gigantic rubbish dumps to find something that can be used and food for her family.

Frank Röth took the picture at the end of September for a FAZ aid project report shortly after 6.30 a.m. with his Leica M10-P digital camera.

A lot of courage: In this picture posted to Twitter on October 26, an unveiled woman standing on top of a car follows a mass movement.

Despite heightened security measures, thousands have set out to gather at the grave of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in the cemetery in her hometown of

, in Iran's Kordestan province, 40 days after the death of Kurdish woman.

The death of the 22-year-old woman on September 16 in vice squad custody has sparked angry protests across the country.

Mahsa Amini was arrested and taken to a police station for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly.

Two hours later, police took her to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.
