Pictures of the year 2022
It was a year of bad news: In the pandemic, there was hope of starting a new life afterwards.
But war, energy crisis and climate catastrophe set new priorities.
And yet other events also moved us in 2022 - we put them together chronologically here.
And our photo editors describe their photos of the year.
January

The Mediterranean as a terrible trap: off
Lampedusa
, the Italian coast guard rescues hundreds of refugees who got into distress in their wooden boat.
Most of them get away with the horror on this January 25th.
But seven people die in the stormy sea.

Only five weeks later, Russia will attack Ukraine.

Jana Voigt:
“The alpaca has become a trend animal in recent years.
It has a funny face, is easy to style and is said to help against burnout and depression as a patient hiking companion.
The arrangement in the photo by
Ilkay Karakurt
perfectly sets the scene for the deceleration effect of the animal: absolute calm, man and animal alone in the open air.
Both are walking with their backs to the viewer, but don’t fall out of the world, because the next settlement is already waiting in front of them in the valley.”

You can celebrate outside: on the Opernplatz in
Frankfurt
, revelers toast the new year.
They can still hope that it will be better than the old one.

He kneels down in front of them: The social medicine doctor Gerhard Trabert is on the road in
Mainz
with the mobile doctor of his association "Poverty and Health in Germany" to provide medical care to the homeless - and to bring them a sleeping bag, as here.
Die Linke nominated Trabert as a candidate for the election for the Federal President on February 13.
The Federal Assembly then elects the incumbent, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Search for evidence: In Sulzbach, the police have a lot to do.
Two suspects are arrested in the Saarland city after two police officers were shot dead near
Kusel
(Rhineland-Palatinate) the night before.
On November 30, the main suspect, a poacher who felt caught and therefore shot, is sentenced to life imprisonment;
the district court of Kaiserslautern determines the particular gravity of the guilt.
The second suspect is acquitted.
He only removed traces and testified comprehensively in the process.

Not a train of the times: In the land of trainspotters, that is England, the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express is an eye-catcher, especially when it
travels over the Ribblehead Viaduct in the
Yorkshire Dales National Park .
As picturesque as the scenery - the traffic turnaround looks different than a Galatea steam locomotive, which rattles through the landscape with emissions that are not exactly low in emissions.

Looked at in the light: the aerials competitions of the ski freestylers are among the most spectacular decisions at the Olympic Winter Games in
Beijing

The training jump of the Chinese Xu Mengtao on February 10 paid off four days later - when she won the gold medal.
With nine gold, four silver and two bronze medals, it will be the most successful winter games in Olympic history for China.

Berlin photographer

His cool portraits are far removed from the clichéd images from current media.”

Difficult understanding: Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is in Moscow
on February 15
.
In the Kremlin, he warns Russian President Vladimir Putin of a military attack on Ukraine and the "serious economic consequences for Russia" that such an attack would have.
Putin and Scholz declare their willingness to continue the dialogue.
But the atmosphere is not only visually distanced.
Olaf Scholz's message went unheard.

Get out of here: Many residents of the Ukrainian capital
Kiev
left their homes after the rocket attacks by the Russian military on February 24.
Rocket fire and advancing Russian troops were reported from all parts of Ukraine from the early hours of the morning.
There is war in Europe.

Signs of solidarity: In a government statement on February 27, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a security policy reorientation: Germany would, among other things, supply anti-tank weapons to Ukraine, which had been invaded by Russia.
Scholz uses the word “time change” for this.
Parliament shows that, to a large extent, it is behind him.

On the move: On
February 26, numerous people demonstrated against the Russian war of aggression on Goetheplatz in
Frankfurt .
In many other cities in Germany, too, people are taking to the streets to show their support for Ukraine.

In case of defense: In the Ukrainian port city of
Odessa
, residents erected barricades in the streets on March 24 to counteract a threatening Russian offensive.

Personal protest: On the main evening news program on Russian state television on March 14, Marina Ovzyannikova holds up a sign that reads: “No war.
stop the war
Don't believe the propaganda.
You're being lied to here.
Russians against the war”.
The courageous employee of the state television calls out: "Stop the war!
No to the war.” Then the transmission breaks off.
Ovsyannikova is arrested and fined.
More arrests and trials followed.
In October, her lawyer announced that she had fled abroad.

A glimpse of a different life: Two Ukrainian children arrive in Berlin
by train from Warsaw on March 11
and look out of the window before they get out.
Many people who fled from the war arrive at the main station, mainly women and children.
They are received and supported by helpers and often taken in by German families.

Call to stand up: In a video speech, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, addresses the members of the German Bundestag at the beginning of the session on March 17.
Among other things, he accuses German politicians of a lack of commitment in the fight against Russia.

Marie Haefner “Right at the beginning of the war, the photographer
Laila Sieber
traveled to
western Ukraine.
There, together with Helena Manhartsberger, she documented the situation away from the front line and made the complexity of the war visible in her sensitive photos.
In this March 13 photo, fleeing refugees stream onto the platform of Lviv train station.
Of the many strong photographs by Sieber from this period, this one stuck in my memory, among other things, because of the composition guided by the light.”

Lonely together: For a long time, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) believed that general vaccination would be decided by the Bundestag.
But the vote on April 7 failed, as can be seen from the minister's helpless look.
In June he presented a seven-point plan to counter a possible wave of corona infections in the fall – which then did not materialize.
Photos: Michael Braunschädel
Claus Eckert: "On the edge of the abyss - the picture by photographer
Michael Braunschädel
leads me impressively
the enormous dimensions of the opencast mine before your eyes.
In the spring, the photo editors of the FAZ sent him to a large-scale demonstration by various environmental protection groups in the direction of Garzweiler.
Some of the approximately 2000 participants, who are calling for the end of lignite as an energy source in order to achieve the climate goals and are therefore also in favor of preserving the village of Lützerath, which is threatened by mining, deviated from the demonstration route and entered the RWE site of the opencast mine.
As you can see, this eruption ended at the overburden edge of the huge hole.
The crowd of demonstrators looking into the void seems almost tiny.
Brown skull reports that some felt helpless at the sight and tears shed.”

A picture of horror: When the Russian armed forces withdrew in early April 2022 after more than a month, according to Ukrainian information, more than 400 bodies were found in the city of
Bucha
, some lying on the open road, most of them civilians.
To this day, Russia denies that Russian soldiers tortured and murdered there.

Once the longest wing span, the Antonov An-225, a six-engine cargo plane, was the world's longest and heaviest operational aircraft - until February 27, when it
caught fire in a Russian airstrike on
Hostomel Airport.
In April, it was concluded that recovery was impossible: the front end was burned, the three right engines and the front wheel sets of the main landing gear were damaged, and the right wing was broken.

The election campaigner as fisherman: Emmanuel Macron announced his candidacy for a second term as French President late.
He fights for votes all the more courageously - like here in the
Paris La Défense Arena
.
In the first ballot on April 10, the forty-five-year-old only got about 27 percent of the votes cast.
In the run-off election on April 24, he received 58.55 percent - probably because many voters want to prevent his opponent Marine Le Pen.

“A very special day in Frankfurt: on May 19, Eintracht returned to the city with the Europa League trophy and around 200,000 fans celebrated.
There was a state of emergency not only in the city center, but also in our photo editors.
A total of six photographers documented the nightly celebrations after the victory in Seville and the entry of the team along the route from the airport to the Roman balcony.
They braved rain showers, crowded fans and pyrotechnics.
When a photographer suddenly dropped out,
Frank Rumpenhorst took
the position in the "Eagle's Nest" on the steeple of St. Nikolai Church.
He managed to capture the fabulous highlight of the celebration: the team appears on the balcony, the crowd goes wild, fireworks light up the evening sky – a Frankfurt summer fairy tale.”

Because of the nine-euro ticket, people are also thronging on the platforms;
At
