Present for a few years in Italy and Switzerland and spotted this year in Germany, the Japanese beetle, or

Popillia japonica

, was the subject of a special surveillance system in the Vaucluse in the fall, reports Le Dauphiné Libéré.

This beetle, currently absent from French territory, worries the various agricultural sectors because of its particularly voracious nature on many crops.

Consequently, experts from Fredon Paca (Regional Federation for the Defense against Pests) have been commissioned by the authorities to carry out surveillance work.

Between April and October, 94 visual examinations were carried out and 35 traps were set in a wide variety of farms.

Nothing revealed the presence of the insect.

A “hitchhiker”

Vigilance around this beetle remains increased despite everything, especially since this "hitchhiker" insect could easily arrive in France inside a passenger or transport vehicle or via larvae laid in the support of cultivation of an ornamental plant.

Any suspicion should be reported to Fredon Paca at 04.13.95.06.07.
