Not long ago, "Digital Dunhuang" recommended by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of China was selected as the "Excellent Case of Building a Community of Shared Future in Cyberspace" at the 2022 World Internet Conference. One of the 12 cases selected among more than 200 cases in the five major fields of security assurance and cyberspace international governance.

Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Research Institute, recently accepted an exclusive interview with reporters from China News Agency and China News Network. He said that at present, the academy has completed the collection of more than 280 caves in Mogao Grottoes, and some of them are in post-production and splicing.

It is estimated that by 2025, all 492 caves with murals in Mogao Grottoes will be collected.

Thirty years of "Digital Dunhuang" polishing cultural "sharing platform"

As early as the early 1990s, in order to realize the permanent preservation and sustainable utilization of the Dunhuang Grottoes, the Dunhuang Academy began the practical exploration of "Digital Dunhuang".

"The degradation of cultural relics is irreversible, no matter how well protected they are. Only by establishing digital archives for cultural relics can they be passed on forever and used continuously." said Fan Jinshi, 84-year-old honorary director of the Dunhuang Academy Comparing the old photos of the Mogao Grottoes before with the present, it is found that great changes have taken place, and it is still "changing". After many years, it may be "less and less and worse".

The "inspiration" to make the cultural relics of Mogao Grottoes "live forever" began when Fan Jinshi came into contact with computers for the first time, and learned that "everything that has been digitized by a computer can be permanently preserved."

Although the technical means and digital effects at that time were not satisfactory, the plan to use modern digital technology to display the historical and cultural background and exquisite cave art of Mogao Grottoes has been put on the agenda.

After more than 30 years of development, the Dunhuang Research Institute has established a complete set of key technical systems such as digital collection, processing, storage, and display of cultural relics, and has formed massive digital resources such as digital photography collection, 3D reconstruction of caves, and panoramic roaming of caves. It is a precious resource to realize the creative transformation and innovative development of excellent traditional culture.

In 2016, the "Digital Dunhuang" resource library was launched, realizing the global sharing of high-definition images of 30 caves and panoramic roaming programs, with a total of more than 16.8 million visits.

In 2020, the "Dunhuang Travel" mini program was officially launched, with more than 200 million people participating in the online interaction, and the cumulative number of visits exceeded 60 million, which effectively promoted the activation and utilization of Dunhuang culture and released the profound power of culture.

In early December, the world's first blockchain-based digital cultural heritage open sharing platform "Digital Dunhuang Open Material Library" jointly created by the Dunhuang Research Institute and Tencent was officially launched.

More than 6,500 high-definition digital resource archives from Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes and other grotto sites and Dunhuang scripture cave documents are open to the world through the material library, creating a "one-stop" Dunhuang for scholars, culture lovers and art creators at home and abroad. A platform for cultural sharing and co-creation.

"Digital Dunhuang" pays more attention to online "flowering" and more offline "results"

From the "visit here" in a casual way, to the "immersive experience" that I yearn for.

While focusing on "telling Dunhuang stories" online, the Dunhuang Research Institute is also constantly exploring offline more interactive tours and new paths for cultural relics protection research.

"Digital Dunhuang" has been successfully launched, and visitors can have a panoramic view just by clicking the mouse.

"Not all people can see the shock of Dunhuang murals with their own eyes. Now we can also feel and understand the charms in digital form." A Sina Weibo netizen said recently that he directly faced the country through the Internet. It is a thousand-year-old treasure, and it is shocking to see the digital technology meet the Dunhuang murals.

Su Bomin told reporters that after the maturity of the "Digital Dunhuang" technology, it will not only be able to authentically record information such as the color and image of cultural relics, but also support archaeological research. Digital archaeology can be compared based on the content of different eras. The painting elements of murals are compared and studied.

Then, in the future, it is possible to use some artificial intelligence methods to analyze and analyze these digital images.

Offline, the second phase of the Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center for tourists to "visit and preview" is also under construction.

Su Bomin explained that after the completion of the first phase of the project, 6,000 daily scheduled visitors can first watch digital movies to understand the value of cultural relics, and then enter the physical cave to visit.

This new type of visit mode allows tourists to obtain a good in-depth tour experience.

Over the past ten years, "Dunhuang tour" has become more and more popular, and the number of tourists visiting Mogao Grottoes has increased year by year.

In addition to the 6,000 scheduled visitors, up to 12,000 emergency visitors will enter the Mogao Grottoes on the same day.

It is also a pity that it is difficult for tourists to fully understand the Mogao Grottoes and have a poor sense of experience during emergency visits.

"I hope to use some of the latest technologies, combined with the ancient Dunhuang culture, to create an immersive, scene-based, and tell tourists a story about Dunhuang's historical background, artistic characteristics and some of it." Su Bomin said, the second phase The function is similar to the first issue, but the display method is different, and the presentation method of the movie will undergo a big change.

Su Bomin said that the Dunhuang Grottoes are the crystallization of the mutual learning and integration of multiple civilizations on the Silk Road. With the help of Internet platforms and technologies, "Digital Dunhuang", an integrated large-scale digital resource guarantee system for the grottoes and an Internet comprehensive Dunhuang cultural service platform, is built. Show the world the crystallization of the interconnection of ancient civilizations, and spread the light of Chinese splendid civilization to the international community.
