A 47-year-old office worker was arrested for smuggling approximately 1.9 kilograms of stimulants, with a final trafficking price of over 100 million yen, from the United States to Narita Airport.

Shingo Sawaguchi (47), a company employee in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, was arrested.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, he is suspected of violating the Stimulants Control Law by smuggling approximately 1.9 kilograms of stimulants, with a final selling price of more than 117 million yen, from the United States to Narita Airport by airmail.

When customs officials checked the luggage with an X-ray inspection, they found what appeared to be a stimulant, and the Metropolitan Police Department arrested the suspect who came to the room of the housing complex in Meguro Ward to receive it.

In response to the investigation, he admitted to the charges that he knew that illegal drugs were contained, and stated that he was approached by a person who claimed to be a Chinese relative of an acquaintance.

Since the spread of the new coronavirus, the number of cases of illegal drugs being brought in as baggage from overseas has decreased, but the Metropolitan Police Department is increasing vigilance as there are a series of cases of smuggling in international cargo.
