Food dye can cause inflammatory bowel disease

Canadian McMaster University scientists have discovered that the use of the dye Allura Red (E129) may lead to inflammatory bowel disease - Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, according to Russia Today.

Nature Communications magazine indicated that experiments conducted on laboratory mice, which ate E129 for a period of 12 weeks, showed that consuming this dye intermittently does not affect the risk of developing colitis.

But eating them at an early age increases the risk of intestinal disorders.

The chronic effect of this dye causes mild colitis, which is associated with an elevated level of serotonin in the colon and impaired epithelial barrier function.

Although it has not been determined whether this dye has a similar effect in humans, the results confirm that E129 causes a hormonal imbalance in the gut, which in turn alters the gut microbiome.

It should be noted that Allura Red (E129) is used in the manufacture of confectionery, non-alcoholic beverages and dairy products.

Its use has increased dramatically over the past decades.
