  • Album These are the 10 most beautiful streets in Spain

Right now there are 105, but as

of January 1,

the (official) list of the most beautiful towns in Spain will be expanded to 111 with the addition of six charming new municipalities spread across the autonomous communities of

Andalusia, Castilla y León and Catalonia.

These are: Castrojeriz (Burgos), El Burgo de Osma (Soria), Durro, Arties and Garòs (Lérida) and Trevélez (Granada).

In this way, the association

formed in 2011

following the footsteps of the French organization

Les plus beaux villages de France

(The most beautiful villages in France) starts the year with new incorporations after a selection process in which the values of each locality to promote and

foster the cultural, natural and rural heritage

in geographical areas of our country with a lower level of industrialization and population.

It is the goal of the association.

Requirements to enter

Therefore, not everyone can enter the list.

To begin with, the municipalities must have a population of less than 15,000 inhabitants and

certified architectural or natural heritage

, in addition to promoting cultural tourism, preserving the facades and having a controlled circulation of vehicles.

There is more: they must also take care of the

green areas

and bet on cleaning and maintenance in an exceptional way, among other requirements.

CASTROJERIZ

The new towns included in the association have not only complied with all these parameters, but their

municipal plenary sessions or government boards

had to expressly request entry.

In the opinion of Francisco Mestre, president of the association, the new ones receive "

the award for a lifetime of care,

love and good work done by their neighbors and institutions, in many cases for several generations, who knew how to leave a legacy that has been collected with love for his descendants".

He also believes that it is a "

great responsibility for the future

, since they have committed themselves to maintaining and improving its architectural beauty, its cultural heritage, its traditions and its natural environment on a daily basis."

Below are the reasons for getting to know these six new municipalities of the association, of which others such as Aínsa, Almagro, Baguergue,

Briones, Caleruega, Frigiliana

, Peñíscola, Segura de la Sierra and Santillana del Mar are already part.

TREVELEZ (Grenada)

We jump to the

Alpujarra of Granada

to enjoy one of the most beautiful corners of the Sierra Nevada National Park.

There, almost 1,500 meters high, is located this municipality known for its Neolithic archaeological sites.

Divided into three neighborhoods (high, medium and low), among its historic buildings, the

church of San Benito

or the hermitage of La Virgen de Las Nieves stand out.

It is also essential to mark a hiking route in the surroundings, either to the area of the

Seven Lagoons

or the Mulhacén peak.

As for the gastronomic delicacies, one cannot leave without trying the

trout with ham.

CASTROJERIZ (Burgos)

Framed within the Camino de Santiago, it has some of the most outstanding landmarks of the journey, such as the

General Hospital of San Antón.

You should also visit the Collegiate Church of Nuestra Señora del Manzano or the

Palace of the Counts of Castro,

a Gothic-style building that has earned it a place on the list due to its importance as a historical heritage.

The Museum of Sacred Art in the church of the

Virgen del Manzano

as well as that of

Santo Domingo de Guzmán

are other must-sees in this beautiful Burgos town that already appeared in guides for pilgrims from the 12th century.

THE BURG OF OSMA (SORIA)

The other Castilian-Leonese town is El Burgo de Osma, a charming walled enclave in the province of

Soria.

Among its main attractions are the

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption

, built between the 12th and 18th centuries and which combines three different artistic styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance.

You also have to discover the Episcopal Palace,

the University of Santa Catalina

and the castle, located on the outskirts of town, making it perfect for enjoying the best views.

ARTIES (LERIDA)

We move on to Catalonia, where four of the six new towns integrated into the association are located.

The first of them is Artiés, in the heart

of the Arán Valley

and at more than 1.100 meters above sea level.

Its location just a few kilometers from the Baqueira station makes it the perfect place to enjoy the snow in winter.

And of the hiking routes in summer between

fir forests and lakes with crystal clear waters.

The heritage that has allowed it to rise as one of the most beautiful municipalities in Spain is made up of buildings such as the Romanesque church of

Santa María de Artiés

, that of San Juan, from the 14th century and the remains of the

Entrasaigües castle

.

The characteristic stone constructions mark the idiosyncrasy of the place.

GARÓS (Lérida)

We continue in the Catalan Pyrenees, right between the surroundings of

Alto and Medio Aran

, where Garós emerges between ravines and streams, a town of 136

souls

.

The tranquility of its streets allows you to discover unique corners such as the

church of San Julián de Garós

, from the 12th century and Romanesque style, like most of the religious buildings in the area.

Like Artiés, it is the perfect place to enjoy winter sports given its proximity to the Baqueira-Beret station, just three kilometers away.

DURRO (Lérida)

Durro is also located in Lérida, a tiny village of barely 80 inhabitants in the

Boí Valley,

in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees.

Of medieval origin and architecture, you should visit the Church of the Nativity, with original Romanesque carvings, and the

hermitage of Sant Quirze

, located on top of a mountain, almost 1,500 meters above sea level.

As it is part of the

Alta Ribagorza region,

it can boast of the area's traditional cuisine, among which dishes such as lamb, seasonal mushrooms, trout or veal stand out as protagonists.
