Study Reveals ...Humans Are Able To Understand Animals

A study conducted by the University of Copenhagen showed that humans are able to understand the significance of the sounds and feelings of animals and birds, and that this is easier with domestic animals than with wild animals, according to the British newspaper, The Guardian.

Communicating with animals may not be the same as in the movie "Dr. Dolittle", in which he talks to animals, but researchers have found that humans can understand the feelings of animals, including pigs, horses and goats, based on their voices.

The team says the findings indicate certain information within the sounds, such as the intensity of the animal's emotions, which seem to be transmitted in a similar way between animals of the same species.

In this context, Dr. Elodie Beaver, a co-author of the research from the University of Copenhagen, said, “It is likely that people base their decisions on their knowledge of the nature of the human voice, when they are more or less aroused, because arousal associated with stress pathways is a system common to all Vertebrates.

The scientists also looked at whether people could tell whether an animal was expressing positive or negative emotions.

Beaver continued, saying: “We cannot rely on what we know from humans, because it is very different from other organisms;

There are a lot of differences in how they express their feelings, even those creatures that are very similar to each other.”

In the research published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the researchers reported recording sounds of six species of animals (horses, pigs, goats, cattle, wild horses, and wild boars).

The team noted whether the sound was emitted when the animal was aroused (as determined by an elevation in heart rate or movement), and whether the sound was emitted in a positive context, such as an expected food, or a negative context, such as isolation.
