Very heavy rain fell overnight from Wednesday to Thursday in the Lisbon region, causing flooding.
The water rose very quickly, trapping motorists and residents.
“We deplore a fatal victim” aged “about 55 years old” who “was in a cellar which was flooded”, declared the commander of civil protection André Fernandes during a press conference.
He also called on the population to stay at home "during periods of intense rain".

The heavy rains, which caused flooding in several areas of Lisbon, damaged many cars while several railway stations, tunnels and roads in the capital were closed.
This situation "shows the challenge and the danger of climate change", said the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, adding that the construction of underground tunnels to drain river water would begin next year.
