Installed within the walls of a fort in Wambrechies, in the North, the memorial is, in fact, inaccessible to the general public and the mayor does not wish to open the place for a private ceremony.

For Georges Waysand, 81, this decision is incomprehensible and his daughter Marianne took the case to social networks.

“On December 15, it will be 80 years since my paternal grandfather, Jean Waysand, was shot as a resistant, at the age of 26, at Fort du Vert Galant in Wambrechies, she explains on her LinkedIn account. .

Her son was then 1 and a half years old.

[…] To commemorate this sad anniversary, my father wanted us to go as a family to gather at the place of execution on Saturday 10 December.

Except that, to get to the war memorial, you need a key, property of the town hall of Wambrechies.

And until then, the family's requests have remained a dead letter.

“We have a ceremony in March.

I cannot open the fort for each person, on demand, I do not have the teams, ”recalls the mayor, Sébastien Brogniart, interviewed by the regional daily.

Ten years ago, Georges Waysand was nevertheless able to organize this intimate ceremony with the help of a deputy mayor.

Faced with the refusal of the mayor, the family decided to go all the same in front of the fort, on Saturday, even if it meant finding the door closed.
