On December 17th last year, a psychosomatic medicine clinic in a building in Kita-ku, Osaka was set on fire, and 26 patients and staff were involved and died.

Shortly before the one-year anniversary of the incident, a father who lost his 31-year-old son, who was a company employee and who was attending the clinic, sent a note to NHK.

The father said, ``For my son, who suddenly lost his life, the time of his life stopped forever, with pain, frustration, and above all, the surprise of ``why?'' No matter how sad he is, My son won't be coming back. Anyway, I really wanted him to be alive, and it's very frustrating. However, I believe that the bereaved family will be able to mourn for their son if they live positively, so I'm trying to support each other as a family."

According to his father, he was a gentle man who didn't like conflict, had high academic ability, and went on to one of the most famous universities in the country, and was a proud son.

He learned specialized knowledge and worked as a technical employee at a major textile manufacturer, and made use of his hobbies to visit nursing homes and other places.

My son suffered from insomnia since he was a student in the master's course, and developed depression in his first post as a member of society. I feel like my brain is boiling. I have no choice but to cool it down little by little, and I plan to live with this symptom for a long period of time."

As he said, he was able to exercise self-restraint and control his physical condition.

In his memoir, the father wrote, ``For the past year, I have come to think that speaking for his son's frustration would be one way to hold a memorial service.'' He wants to convey three things. and

The first is that the suspect seems to have tried to commit suicide by involving unrelated people, so he wants experts to consider ways to prevent "extended suicide."

He said, ``I don't want my son's death to be in vain.

Secondly, in order to consider measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident, I would like you to proceed with a scientific analysis of the "peculiarity" of the suspect's feelings.

It is said that the suspect feels the fear of the unfathomable "darkness of the heart" that is difficult to understand.

The third is to promote understanding of patients who are battling "mental illness" and medical professionals who are in charge of their care.

"If it hadn't been for this incident, my son would have returned to work from the beginning of this year and would have been living a happy life. On the other hand, the culprit who got involved with others, 'vented his sorrows' and died as he wished. Who has a mental illness? The 'darkness in the heart' of the criminal is something different."

Finally, the father concludes, "Every morning, each family member puts their hands together with their son's portrait. All the bereaved families are still deeply hurt, and this is all they can do to sort out their feelings in the first year."
