A young Chinese woman has dedicated her life to creating artificial eyes with unique and unusual features after losing one of her eyes in a serious car accident.

In 2013, Xia Tong lost an eye in a car accident. She was only 18 years old at the time. She had her eye replaced with a prosthetic eye.

Instead of losing faith in herself and turning away from people, the young woman decided to make her artificial eye an element that distinguishes her from others.

Tong completed her studies to become a prosthetic eye technician (eye specialist), and began making prosthetic eyes with various advantages and then showcased them on social media, slowly building a loyal following for her unique innovation.

Xia Tong, 28, told the Beijing News that she got into the business of creating distinctive prosthetic eyes as a way to help people like her deal with confidence issues.

"I've met a lot of people who become withdrawn or have low self-esteem after losing an eye," she added. This inspired Tong to specialize in eyes and create better artificial eyes.

And while some people desire realistic prosthetic limbs and organs, some, like Chia Tong herself, are inclined to be unique and stand out.

So Tong integrated small LED lights into the artificial eyes, which makes the wearer appear to have superhuman abilities or to be a "robot", and this is very special, she says.
