• Guide Places in Spain that you should know before they disappear

  • Trends Where do we Spaniards escape to on the December long weekend?

All cities, starting with their own, seem expensive.

But the ones that break records are those that each year appear in the

top ten

of the report on the cost of living in the world prepared

by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)

.

Almost all of these cities are the usual suspects.

But this year of galloping inflation in a large part of the planet, the ranking has seen a certain landslide in the top positions.

For the first time,

New York City

tops the rankings, though it shares gold with

Singapore

.

Last year's number one,

Tel Aviv

, is now in third place.

At the other end of the table are

Damascus

(Syria),

Tripoli

(Libya) and

Tehran

(Iran) as the cheapest in the world.

On average, prices in the 172 cities analyzed by the EIU have increased by 8.1%, the highest rate

in the 20 years

for which data is available.

"The war in Ukraine, Western sanctions on Russia and China's zero Covid policy have caused supply chain problems which, combined with rising interest rates and fluctuations in the exchange rate, have led to

a crisis .

of the cost of living throughout the world

", has summarized Upasana Dutt, at the head of the ranking.

Nothing seems to escape inflation: "The rise in gas prices in the cities was particularly strong (as it was last year), but food, utilities and household items are becoming more expensive for city dwellers," he added.

Of course, there are cities in which the price increase has been more pronounced.

For example,

Istanbul

, with a price increase of 86%,

Buenos Aires

(64%) and Tehran (57%).

High inflation in the US does not reach these extremes, but it has been the strongest in 40 years.

Reason why New York tops the list, but

Los Angeles

and

San Francisco

also appear in the top 10: Earlier this year, US inflation was the highest in more than 40 years.

Zurich, the most expensive European

Meanwhile, Moscow and St. Petersburg have moved up the rankings from 88th and 70th to 37th and 73rd respectively, partly as a result of Western sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Kiev has not been included in this year's report that compares

more than 400 prices

for more than 200 products and services around the world.

There are European cities in the

top ten

:

Zurich,

in sixth place on the list, with

Paris, Copenhagen

and

Geneva

rounding out the rest.

In general, most European metropolises have fallen in the ranking due to the energy crisis and the weakening of the euro and other local currencies.

Stockholm, Luxembourg and Lyon have recorded the biggest falls in the ranking.

3.Tel Aviv

4. Hong Kong and Los Angeles

6. Zurich

8.Saint Francis
