In 2001, I attended an interesting lecture given by the President of the Institute of Productivity and Quality in Mauritius, on how this country located in the Indian Ocean succeeded in applying quality effectively in the government sector, using the concept of continuous improvement “Kaizen” that originated in Japan, and how the President of Mauritius participated effectively in The media campaign to raise society's awareness of the importance of quality, as well as the rationalization of water and electricity consumption. Since then, I remember Mauritius from time to time and I always read about it as a success story in some field, until a friend invited me to visit him in early 2023, and that encouraged me to learn more about this country. As always, I'm always eager to share what I'm learning with my dear readers.

Mauritius is an amazing attraction for visitors, and this African island is 900 km from Madagascar and 180 km north-east of Reunion, France, and includes several islands of volcanic origin.

Besides the main island of Mauritius, there is Rodrigues Island, 600 km to the east, and two outer islands, Agalega and St. Brandon Archipelago.

The population of Mauritius is 1.4 million, and almost all of the population lives in the capital, and the largest city is Port Louis.

Mauritius is famous for its dodo bird, which became extinct at the hands of European colonizers, and is also famous for its multicultural population.

According to Nationsonline.org, the resorts of Mauritius are among the finest and most beautiful resorts in the world, and they are expensive, reaching more than $600 per night, and have dozens of attractions, especially the colorful land, an underwater waterfall, and giant water lilies in Pamplemousses Park. botanicals, drum ravan, sega music, quality golf courses.

The interesting thing about my learning journey about this island is that the first people to discover it were the Arabs and called it “The World of Arabism”, followed by the Malay tribes, and about 100 years later it was discovered by the Portuguese in the early 16th century, then occupied by the Dutch, French and British.

It gained its independence in 1968, and since then Mauritius has developed from a low-income agricultural economy to a diversified middle-income economy with the growth of the industrial, financial and tourism sectors. It is considered one of the highest countries in terms of per capita income in Africa. Only Equatorial Guinea and Seychelles.

It has a stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record.

Mauritius's developing, mixed economy relies on agriculture, especially sugar cane, along with financial services and tourism.

The port facilities in Port Louis are among the best, and most of the country's exports are transported through this port, and the main international airport is located on the other side of the island.

Mauritius has become a true success story by maintaining a stable democracy and its commitment to human rights. It is a popular destination for tourists looking for luxury thanks to its natural beauty, cultural diversity and interesting attractions. Mauritius is proud of having the highest human development index of the United Nations Development Program (HDI) at the level of Africa.

And to talk the rest.
