About 40 cattle, cows and calves, have been killed by a mysterious creature that has left no trace in the town of Meeker in northwestern Colorado (USA) since October, reports the

New York Post

.

Several avenues have been put forward to explain this phenomenon, which remains a mystery for the time being.

After the first attack, which resulted in the death of 18 cattle, the wolf thesis was first put forward.

Nevertheless, a study ultimately showed that only five of these animals had injuries characteristic of a wolf attack, such as bite marks.

In addition, cameras and aerial surveillance failed to identify the presence of a canine or a pack.

"That doesn't mean they're not there," however, qualified Travis Black, a local official.

Only a pack was observed 150 kilometers from the place of the attack.

For breeder Jerry Klinglesmith, "the most likely scenario would be this: what appears to be a canine attack may have triggered the appearance of an as yet unidentified cause of death," he wrote to local newspaper

The Fence Post

.

In particular, the cattle could have been infected with a bacterium, which could have led to the appearance of cases of anthrax (blackleg), an often fatal disease that affects cattle and sheep.

However, the results of the autopsies did not confirm this hypothesis.
