17 million Americans believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows

A survey from the American Dairy Innovation Center found that 7% of American adults believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

And if that percentage seems small enough to be reasonable, we should note that 7% of American adults is about 17.3 million people.

The survey included some other stats like a quarter of Americans go to the store before 6 a.m. to get milk, and 95% of Americans currently have at least one type of cheese in their fridge.

Explaining the ancient cows' dilemma, the center wrote on its website: "To be fair, some questions and myths about milk might make us smile."

"But we know that we need accurate information to make the best choices for ourselves and our families about what we eat."

"It's a bit surprising," a spokeswoman for the campaign told CNN, commenting on the study's findings regarding chocolate milk. "We have no idea why people come to this conclusion."
