A professor at Waseda University was found to have made fictitious claims of more than 100,000 yen in national research funds, and Waseda University suspended the professor for four months.

Professor Tadashi Asada of Waseda University's Faculty of Human Sciences was given a four-month disciplinary action.

According to the university, Professor Asada billed the university fictitiously about 102,000 yen in 2010 as a reward for part-time students who cooperated with his research.

The honorarium was provided from the government's scientific research subsidy, and last year information about the fraud was sent to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

When the university that was contacted investigated, it was found that the professor's billing and the student's work situation were different, and the fictitious billing was revealed.

According to the university, at the time, Professor Asada had the students bring cash to the laboratory after the reward money was transferred, and collected it.

The details of its usage are unknown.

As of May this year, the university has taken measures to suspend the use of this year's scientific research funds.

Waseda University said, "We sincerely apologize and will do our best to prevent a recurrence."
