Less than a month from the release of
Avatar: The Way of the Water
, James Cameron reiterates his fears about the profitability of his film.
To hear the filmmaker who is careful not to reveal the exact production budget, his feature film would have to "be the third or fourth most profitable film in history" if only to cover its costs.
"That's our break-even point," he revealed to GQ.
And James Cameron knows what he's talking about as he's behind two of the three highest-grossing films of all time.
These are
Avatar
first of the name, which is on the highest step of the podium with 2.9 billion dollars in revenue worldwide, and
Titanic
which is in third position with its 2.1 billion in profits.
The second place is held by
Avengers: Endgame
.
Star Wars: The Force
Awakens and
Avengers: Infinity War
complete the very exclusive club of five films that have exceeded $2 billion in profits.
A saga to finish
We can therefore conclude that
Avatar: The Way of the Water
must reach 2 billion dollars in revenue – and even much more if we take inflation into account – for James Cameron to cover his costs.
A profitability on which obviously depends the continuation of the franchise while it remains to turn the fourth and fifth opus.
However, we will be careful not to announce prematurely the drowning of the director of
Abyss
.
Because even if the pandemic and the takeover of streaming have kept audiences away from theaters, blockbusters like
Spider-Man: No Way Home
or
Top Gun: Maverick
have had no trouble doing well by garnering comfortable profits.
It remains to be hoped that
The Way of the Water
will provoke the same enthusiasm.
