Published every year since 2005, the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) tracks the environmental performance of some sixty nations responsible for 92% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

More specifically, it analyzes the actions of each country in four categories: climate policy, renewable energies, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The latest edition of the study finds that no country is on track to limit global warming on Earth to 1.5°C since the start of the industrial era.

The first three places in the index, which would correspond to countries that show “very good” climate performance, have also been vacant since 2008 – and will remain so this year –, while Denmark and Sweden rank respectively fourth and fifth.

A tail trio “incompatible” with maintaining global warming

Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kazakhstan, on the other hand, come in last.

The first city, which closes the ranking, is one of the few countries in the world that has not yet ratified the Paris Agreement and is one of the 20 countries in the world with the largest oil and gas reserves exploited for this purpose. day, which is not compatible with the objective of maintaining global warming at 1.5 ° C, specifies the study.

China and the United States, the two largest emitters in the world, are among the worst performing countries in terms of climate protection.

The former fell 13 places to 51st and its performance is considered "very poor", due to the observed increase in fossil fuel investments, and although renewable energies have also seen significant development in the country.

The two "great powers" far from being exemplary

Even though the United States has moved up three places thanks to climate measures introduced after Joe Biden took office, CICC experts criticize the fact that certain measures there are not binding enough and implemented quickly enough.

The country, the world's second largest emitter, is thus in 52nd place in the ranking, behind the Asian giant.

OUR “GLOBAL WARMING” FILE

France, meanwhile, has fallen 11 places in the Climate Change Performance Index this year and now ranks 28th, with an overall average score.

To get closer to a global warming target well below 2°C, the country, which fiercely defends the use of nuclear energy, must, among other things, increase the share of renewable energies in its energy mix and promote them more, according to the study.
