The Berlin public prosecutor's office is investigating the well-known rapper Kontra K on suspicion of drug trafficking.

A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office confirmed a corresponding report by the broadcaster NDR on request.

The rapper is said to have arranged transactions for around 100 kilograms of cannabis via an encrypted so-called crypto mobile phone.

The rapper's management did not comment on the request of the German Press Agency.

The presumption of innocence applies until the final conclusion of the proceedings.

The Berlin State Criminal Police Office is investigating the suspicion that the rapper is said to have tried to smuggle 100 kilograms of cannabis to Germany and sell it in spring 2020.

The drugs are said to have been worth several hundred thousand euros.

Kontra K (35) has released a number one album every year since 2016.

His current album "Für den Himmel durch die Hölle" also topped the German album charts again.

The current tour is scheduled to start next week.

The encryption technology of the so-called encrochat cell phones was considered secure and was therefore very popular with criminals.

The police in the Netherlands and France managed to crack the software in spring 2020.

Millions of secret data were siphoned off.

This led to thousands of investigations and arrests across Europe.

In Berlin alone, chat messages from hundreds of users were evaluated.

As of July, 69 charges had been filed.

Investigations were still ongoing in 97 cases.

In total, more than EUR 4.6 million in illegally acquired assets were confiscated.

The numbers are likely to be even higher now.

According to NDR, there are 4,500 suspects and 1,900 arrest warrants throughout Germany, so far 670 judgments have been imposed, 38 tons of drugs confiscated and 610 million euros confiscated.
