The Hotel María Cristina is impressive from any angle that it is observed.

Stately, elegant and an icon of San Sebastián, it was the undisputed protagonist of the belle époque since it

opened its doors in 1912

.

One hundred and ten years later it continues to be a benchmark for luxury,

home

to the actors who parade for each edition of the Film Festival held in September in the city and an open book of history that begins with the regent queen María Cristina, the first person to set foot the hotel and for which it bears his name.

It was in 1902 when a group of people from San Sebastián created the Sociedad de Fomento de San Sebastián.

The objective: to build a large hotel and a theater -it would be inaugurated days after the first one and would bear the name of Victoria Eugenia, wife of Alfonso XIII- that would strengthen the city.

Located at the mouth of the Urumea River,

between the beaches of La Concha and Zurriola

, little by little it conquered the aristocracy of those years, who made the destination fashionable.

he has had different reforms.

In 1985 it closed two years to be updated.

Since then it has 139 rooms, 25 of them suites.

Bette Davis

's

, where the actress stayed the year she received the Donostia Award at the festival, reflects very well that balance between luxury, elegance and a welcoming atmosphere.

"The actress asked to stay for an indefinite period of time to write her memoirs," explains Borja García, general manager of the hotel, which since 2012 belongs to the Luxury Collection family of the Marriott chain.

In Donosti she made her last public appearance before passing away in 1989. It is one of the most requested rooms in the hotel even today.

Liz Taylor, John Travolta, Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve, Woody Allen and Brad Pitt

make up that long list of illustrious names that have stayed here.

In the last edition, Penélope Cruz, Juliette Binoche, Liam Neeson and Ana de Armas did so, among others.

Being a host for more than 100 years and maintaining the level without losing the essence has a lot of merit.

Upon reaching the lobby, only a

The art that hangs on its walls -there is a Sorolla who takes center stage-, the chandeliers, the majestic stairs... Everything reflects harmony.

A visit to the

Dry Bar

is essential , where the mastery of the

bartenders

-some have been in the house for 30 years- makes it difficult to decide on a single cocktail.

You can also opt for a quick and rich snack, like everything in this place.

The breakfast enjoys a magnificent and

deserved fame.

Its crab omelette, its

Benedict

eggs and its exquisite pastries have made it a benchmark.

To discover the gastronomy of the environment, they have Mimo Bite the Experience, where they also organize workshops that set up a route through the best

pintxos

in the city.
