A couple residing near Portland (United States) gave birth, on October 31, to twins whose embryos had been frozen for… thirty years, a world first according to CNN.
Already parents of four other children, aged 2, 3, 6 and 8, they wanted to welcome children born by in vitro fertilization (IVF) into their family.
The embryos had been frozen in 1992 at the request of a couple who had used a surrogate mother.
Indeed, during an IVF procedure, it happens that supernumerary embryos are cryopreserved.
They are then graciously given to another couple or used for medical research.
Embryo adoption
“We always thought that we would have as many [children] as God wants to give us, and… when we heard about embryo adoption, we thought it was something we would like to do” , explained the proud father of the twins.
The parents insisted on proceeding with the implantation of the three frozen embryos, but one of them ultimately did not survive.
The two children born, a boy named Timothy and a girl named Lydia, are completely healthy.
As the father of the family humorously points out, “in a sense, they are our oldest children, even if they are our youngest”.
He also added: “We weren't looking to get the longest frozen embryos in the world.
We just wanted those who had been waiting the longest.
