The musical “The Lion King” was launched, for the first time in the Middle East, at the Etihad Arena Theater on Yas Island, and the performances will continue until December 10 in the capital.

Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor landed in Abu Dhabi, accompanied by a group of international artists, to take part in the final leg of the play's first international tour and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Broadway premiere.

The first performance of the play on the 18th of this month was well received by the audience, who applauded at the end of the performance.

Nicholas Rena, managing director of Proactive Entertainment, the promotional company responsible for staging the play in the Middle East, said: “We have witnessed a turnout that exceeded our expectations for attending the play (The Lion King), and we look forward to receiving the audience during the coming weeks, and presenting fun shows that meet aspirations.”

He added, “We are proud to present the musical in Abu Dhabi to continue the success path that began on the most famous international theaters, such as the West End and Broadway.

We also affirm that hosting this play holds promising prospects for establishing more distinguished musicals in the emirate.

For his part, producer and CEO of the Michael Castle Group said: “The international tour of the play, over the past four years, has included a group of the most important cities in the world, and allowed large numbers of audiences to watch this theatrical performance.

We promise the audience of Abu Dhabi and the Middle East a wonderful musical show that embodies the creative vision of director Julie Taymor.

While Vice President of International Strategies and Licensing Partnerships at Disney Theatrical Productions, Felipe Gamba, said, "The social events accompanying the launch of the (The Lion King) show, the global phenomenon that celebrates cultural diversity, is of the same importance as the show in the UAE."

He added, “The main objective of the musical, which depicts a story that has touched the hearts of audiences around the world for 25 years, reflects the UAE’s ability to embrace all cultures and nationalities.

We are delighted to collaborate with our partners Michael Castle Group and Proactive Entertainment to bring the exceptional artistic vision of Julie Taymor and her expert team to this shared global experience.”
