Faced with the current bronchiolitis epidemic, the pediatric departments of the Rouen hospital are, like many other French hospitals, completely saturated.
“Out of 24 beds, we have 21 children hospitalized for bronchiolitis.
There are so many that our unit 'overflows' onto our other hospitalization units,” explains Dr. Solen Raymond, head of the infant unit.
A situation that exhausts caregivers
“We had to close to redeploy the staff and be able to suddenly open all the beds in our unit, adds Solen Raymond.
But our caregivers are exhausted!
I myself am on my twelfth day of work in a row, without rest.
The paramedics are called back on their days of recovery, of rest in order to be able to successfully maintain an open unit to continue the care”.
Doctor Sophie Galène, head of pediatric intensive care, confirms: “We face an epidemic of bronchiolitis every year, it is known.
But there, we have a very very important and very early peak compared to other years.
Out of 14 rooms, we have had 12 babies hospitalized for this disease, which is a record in the unit”.
