TV World Cup security interrupts the live broadcast of a Danish journalist and threatens to break his camera
The
World Cup in Qatar
is just around the corner -it starts on November 20- and there are two television stations that have paid for the rights to broadcast it.
On the one hand,
RTVE
, the only open television that, after an agreement with
Mediapro
, the amount of which is unknown at the moment, will broadcast the matches of the Spanish team, along with a dozen others.
And, on the other,
Movistar Plus+
, the payment platform that will broadcast the entire tournament.
And the whole is the entire
World Cup in Qatar
.
64 matches
, including all those of the
Spanish team
, plus the
remaining 44
that will be played by the rest of the teams.
How much can such coverage amount to?
As if it were the best kept secret,
RTVE
, for example, will not reveal how much it has cost the public entity to get the rights to the
Soccer World Cup
until it is over.
In fact, if it weren't for a question from a member of the Mixed Group in Congress about the cost of winning the championship, it would probably never be known.
The figures that are being considered is that
RTVE
paid about 35 million to
Mediapro
, exceeding the offers presented by
Mediaset
and
Atresmedia
, but very far from what Jaume Roures' audiovisual group intended to achieve for the sale,
about 50 million
.
A few days after the agreement between
RTVE
and
Mediapro
, it was
Movistar Plus+
who announced the agreement with the audiovisual group to broadcast the
Qatar Soccer World Cup in
its entirety .
The amount of the agreement was not disclosed either, although to get an idea of the cost you can see the figures from
LaLiga
.
Last December
Movistar Plus+
and
Dazn acquired
the audiovisual rights of
LaLiga
in Spain and Andorra for the next five years, until the 2026-2027 season, at a price
of 4,000 million euros
, according to the specialized media.
On this occasion, the payment platform will have a channel created exclusively for
Gol Mundial
-only for customers who have contracted
LaLiga
or
All football-
and a second channel,
Gol Mundial 2,
to also be able to watch the matches that are played simultaneously.
Movistar Plus+
will also be the only platform to broadcast the entire competition in 4K (UHD), the highest image quality.
To which must be added summaries, interviews, analyses, reports.
A mammoth deployment with a high economic cost, but also resources.
RTVE
, for its part, has also scored the goal of 4K.
This is the first worldwide broadcast of DTT in UHD-4K in the open of the 20 games that will be broadcast.
Therefore, also more investment, although the public entity together with other televisions has been working on this type of broadcast for some time.
Mónica Marchante and Carlos Martínez, in the writing of Movistar Plus+.MOVISTAR PLUS+
Broadcasting a
World Cup
like the one in
Qatar
entails an extra effort that goes far beyond the figures.
A preparation and organization of months and some professionals who will dedicate all their work to this coverage.
In the case of
RTVE
, an even higher cost, taking into account that the public entity
does not earn anything for advertising
or, of course, for the payment of subscriptions, as
Movistar Plus+
does .
Although the benefit that both television stations will obtain from broadcasting the
World Cup
will not be known until its completion, it is undeniable that
RTVE
's biggest gain will be to increase its battered audience and the prestige that comes from re-broadcasting a World Cup on public television.
While in the case of
Movistar Plus+
, prestige is added to the new customers who decide to pay to see it, plus what is received from advertising.
On the other hand, the investment that both RTVE and Movistar Plus+ have made and will make.
First,
displacements
.
Although the extension of
Qatar
-11,500 square kilometers- is far from, for example, the extension in the World Cup in Russia, the displacements and per diems of the human resources that travel to
Qatar
will not be cheap.
For example, the starting fee for a taxi starts at 10 euros
Second,
accommodations
.
The country only has
300 hotels
and it is expected that 1.5 million people will stay during the four weeks of the championship.
With few hotels and high demand, prices rise.
Thus, you can pay from
104 euros for the cheapest offer
to
5,133 euros for one night at the Marriott
.
Third,
the flights
.
A one-way tourist ticket to Doha on Qatar Airways costs
1,956 euros , while a
business
ticket is
around 6,000.
To all this we should add meals, services, working hours, assemblies, productions...
Maldini, at the content meeting for The Day After. MOVISTAR PLUS+
"We completely devoted ourselves to the World Cup," they acknowledge from
Movistar Plus+
.
As the payment platform has explained to EL MUNDO, the entire burden of the broadcast, apart from the channel created expressly for it, will be assumed by both the newsroom and the sports newsroom.
"For a sports journalist, it's the biggest event you can cover, along with the Olympic Games and Luis Enrique's Spanish team excites me. He has shown that he knows how to compete in the big events," says the greatest football expert on television,
Julio Maldonado 'Maldini'
, one of the journalists who will cover the championship on site for
Movistar Plus+
.
"About 80 people including editors, filmmakers, producers, set technicians, the Interface team to show the events on our platform, the programming team... They are all dedicated exclusively to the
Qatar World Cup,
" they explain.
As revealed by
Mediapro
, more than 180 people from the audiovisual group have been involved for the last year working on the
World Cup in Qatar
and 100 of them for
Gol Mundial
.
Of those 100, 15 are those who travel to Qatar.
To get an idea, for example, the
Argentine public television
spent, according to various local media, more than 12,000 euros just on television coverage of the World Cup Draw.
A single day, almost 9,000 euros in travel for the seven communicators they sent and another 3,000 in per diems.
Now imagine the 28 days that this World Cup lasts.
These trips and the coverage in
Qatar
were included in the budget for the
Movistar Plus+ Sports
season .
In addition, thanks to the previous organization, a lot of production is also local and "was already contemplated".
But it is not only what are there, but also the deployment from Madrid.
In the Movistar Plus+ newsroom, the faces of the news, and already at night, Sport+ Qatar 2022, with
Susana Guasch
or
Carlos Martínez
, among others.
From Qatar,
Juanma Castaño
,
Maldini
and
Mónica Marchante
, who will cover not only the World Cup information but also interviews and analysis from the country where the competition is held.
For its part,
RTVE
has also invested its entire hard core in
Qatar
.
During the four weeks of competition, the public entity will offer more than
120 hours of soccer on La 1 and Teledeporte
between matches and special daily programs.
"The road has been long, dense and intense, but we have returned to the same point as in 1998, to have the possibility of offering these matches", explained
Juan Carlos Rivero
a few days ago , in charge of narrating the matches on public television.
A path of informative intensity of which they are aware, and not only for broadcasting and reporting on a sporting event of such magnitude, but also for the
World Cup
that it is.
This Wednesday a group of Qatari officers for no reason prevented a Danish journalist from recording a broadcast and threatened to break his camera.
A pressure that those who will be in charge of covering the championship are not oblivious to.
"Although it is my third World Cup, after those in Germany and South Africa, I face it with the same enthusiasm as the first, but with much, much more experience. An experience that helps me to face
an atypical World Cup due to the circumstances that surround it
. As As a woman, I am especially sensitive to this," says the journalist from Movistar Deportes Plus+,
Mónica Marchante
.
