Foreign words in the Emirati dialect Lecture on «Emirates Heritage»

The Emirates Heritage Club - Zayed Center for Studies and Research, organized a virtual lecture yesterday, entitled "Dictionary of Foreign Words in the Emirati Colloquial Dialect", presented by the author of the dictionary, Sorour Khalifa Al Kaabi, a researcher in the heritage and history of the UAE. , which is organized by the Centre.

Sorour Al-Kaabi said that the dictionary came out of concern for the local dialect of the UAE, indicating that the aim of its authorship is to introduce new generations to their Emirati dialect, and the words that entered it, indicating that the UAE society was characterized by diversity and richness in local dialects, but there have been major changes. On the dialect, because of the human and cultural diversity that exists in the country.

The lecturer dealt with the advantages of the Emirati dialect, and reviewed the changes and additions that entered it for a number of reasons, including the emergence of modern technology, and human migrations from outside the Emirates, as the dialect absorbed foreign terms and names related to technology, as well as the expressions and conventions introduced to it from contact with other cultures.

The lecturer praised the pioneers in the field of lexicography, especially Dr. Faleh Handal, whom he described as the father of dictionaries in the Emirates. He also appreciated the efforts of institutions interested in preserving heritage in the country, and the great official support for researchers in this aspect.

He called for pride in the local dialect, and work to spread knowledge of it and the Arabic language, in general, among the new generations, out of sympathy for the fact that language represents the main component of the civilization of every society.

Fatima Al-Mansoori, Director of the Zayed Center for Studies and Research, stated that the “Reading in Emirati Publications” program, which is supervised by Moza Awad Al-Dari, Head of the Studies and Research Department at the Center, aims to shed light on Emirati publications by hosting its writers to talk about them.
