after 20 years of good and loyal service.
She had been talking about it for a while, but the actress finally decided to formalize her departure on Instagram in the middle of the broadcast of a 19th season in which her character was already becoming rarer.
“I will be forever grateful and humbled for your love and support, and for Meredith Gray and the show for 19 seasons,” she wrote on Instagram.
“None of this would have been possible without the best fans in the world.
You all helped make this adventure as fun as it is iconic!

The surge of love from fans towards Ellen Pompeo had begun a few days before this announcement, after the broadcast of the last episode of the first half of the 19th season which will resume next February.
Indeed, a trailer for the second part shows Meredith Gray leaving Seattle to make a new start in Boston, thus signing her departure from the series.
“This is not the first time you have experienced such a shock … You know that the series will continue and I will obviously be back to pay a visit (from time to time)”, concluded Ellen Pompeo who, presumably, should make a few appearances in
Grey's Anatomy
in the future.
