The

sports journalist Chema Abad

, who closed his professional career in September 2021 after

43 years at Radio Nacional

de España (RNE), has died this Friday in Madrid at the age of 65, the network reports.

Chema Abad had been

admitted to a hospital

in Madrid since last September due to a stroke from which he was finally unable to recover.

Abad began his radio career at La Voz de Madrid, later joining Antena 3 Radio in Valencia (1981-82), where he was responsible for Sports, and later at Radio Cadena Española, where, after its merger with Radio Nacional , he was

in charge of the sports team

and incorporated a space for social gatherings into the programs: "Debate at stake".

Match narrator, as he liked to define himself, Chema Abad narrated more than 3,000 matches and was a special envoy at six Soccer World Cups, six Euro Cups and two editions of the Olympic Games.

He was the director of Sports at RNE and that of the Tablero Deportivo space.

In his last stage he was responsible for Radiogaceta, the emblematic daily program of Radio Nacional de España.
