You don't need to go west to see the “Gwenn ha du” floating – in Breton, “white and black” –: the modern flag of Brittany appears regularly in stadiums, concert halls… and even in heart of events!

“He represents Brittany and the Bretons as a whole”

It must be said that the pavilion, made up of a speckle of ermine and nine stripes (five black, which represent the countries of Upper Brittany, and four white stripes, which symbolize the countries of Lower Brittany) has become, since its creation at the beginning of the 20th century, hyperpopular.

OUR “BRITTANY” FILE

“Today, the Breton flag is really ubiquitous, it floats on almost all (Breton) town halls, it is found everywhere”, explains Nicolas Graignic, creator of the YouTube channel Istoerioù Breizh.

This banner is the work of a young Breton architect who was inspired by “the American flag and, probably, the Greek flag”.
