Bullfighting, age-old tradition or barbaric act?
The deputy La France insoumise Aymeric Caron presents a bill to the National Assembly which aims to ban the practice, which is very popular in the South-West and around the Mediterranean.
In the text of his proposal, the Parisian deputy highlights an opinion from the national order of veterinarians published in 2016 which declared that “bullfighting shows” are not compatible with respect for the well-being of the animal.
For their part, supporters of bullfighting defend themselves.
Elected officials and aficionados will organize gatherings on Saturday November 19 to support their tradition.
On this issue, public opinion is divided.
In February 2022, responding to an Ifop poll, 77% of French people said they were in favor of banning this practice.
But in the bullfighting towns, where this practice has been rooted for generations, 72% of the inhabitants are in favor of maintaining bullfighting.
The member's bill, which should be put to the vote on November 24 in the hemicycle, has very little chance of being adopted.
The government of Elisabeth Borne has already indicated that it will vote against Aymeric Caron's proposal.
