• In September and October 2022, physical violence would be down compared to 2021, according to the state.

  • The same would apply to damage to property, in particular burglary.

  • Additional police officers were operational at the start of the school year.

A CRS unit also arrived at the end of September.

A little over a month after the media series of violence (homicides, rape, shooting, overthrown policeman, etc.) which shook the Nantes conurbation, the authorities met Monday evening at the Loire-Atlantique prefecture on the occasion of the steering committee of the integrated security contract signed between the municipality and the State.

The opportunity for the actors to take stock of the latest figures on delinquency.

"A certain number of dramas have moved public opinion", immediately recognizes the prefect, Didier Martin.

The balance sheet unveiled for the months of September and October reveals, however, a “significant improvement in the situation”.

While physical violence against people has increased by 5.7% across the department compared to the same months of 2021, it is down by 2.1% in the Nantes conurbation and by 1.6% in the city. from Nantes.

“Rather encouraging” results that hide disparities: violence on the public highway has fallen sharply (-27% in the agglomeration), while intra-family violence has increased (+7.5% in the agglomeration).

Same rather positive trend on the side of damage to property (theft, burglary).

These fell in September and October by 4.9% in Loire-Atlantique, by 14% in the Nantes conurbation and by 18.5% in Nantes, compared to 2021.

The effect of additional staff?

For the prefecture as for the city of Nantes, this observation would be explained by the “strong mobilization” of the police and gendarmerie services, but also by the creation of additional means.

Some 70 national police officers, assigned mainly to the public highway, indeed gradually arrived until September.

Reinforcement doubled, since the end of September, by the fielding of a CRS unit of around 70 agents.

"They participate in the improvement of the results", welcomes Didier Martin.

“Commitments are kept.

Nantes residents say they see more presence, more authority, on public roads.

It's reassuring, ”said Johanna Rolland (PS), mayor of Nantes, who does not forget to point out that the volume of interventions by the municipal police is also increasing.

However, it is difficult to draw many conclusions on a photograph of two months.

The 2022 annual safety report, communicated at the earliest at the end of January soon, will make it possible to know whether or not this impression of improvement is confirmed over a longer period.

“This collective battle is a long-term one,” insists Johanna Rolland.

As for judicial activity, presented over the past ten months of 2022, it shows “very strong” growth.

Presentations to the public prosecutor's office at the end of their police custody are 30% higher than in 2021, as are warrants of deposit (+30%).

An increase justified by a finer "selection" of files to be prioritized, justifies Renaud Gaudeul, the Nantes prosecutor.
