A young student with a disability, Lauren had to leave Los Angeles for New York a short time ago.
But for this 20-year-old American, taking the metro is a real ordeal because only 27% of the stations in the “Big Apple” are accessible to people in wheelchairs.
“Every morning, I have to check the transportation system app to see if the elevators I plan to use are in working order,” Lauren says.
When this is not the case, the young woman must join, on the surface, a better endowed station.
"That's why I have an unlimited pass," she says.
It would be untenable if I had to pay per trip”.
"The world is not designed for the disabled"
According to the student, people in her situation are often “forgotten”: “Many of my friends have told me that they don't think about all that, except when they are with me or when I talk to them about it.
I don't blame them.
Disability is only perceived as a weakness because the world is not designed for us”.
Discover the extent of the "disaster" in this video from our partner Brut.
