Baby dies of cold on boat

Italian coast guard officers found a 20-day-old baby dead on a migrant boat, after they came to his rescue in the waters near the island of Lampedusa.

Today, the Italian news agency ANSA reported that the infant, who was traveling with his 19-year-old mother from Côte d'Ivoire, was suffering from respiratory problems and the family was trying to reach Italy for treatment.

Sources said that a doctor examined the child's body, and found no traces of violence, and concluded that the death may have occurred due to a low body temperature, in addition to the infant's weakness.

The small boat was carrying 36 people, including 9 women and two minor children.
