British actor Leslie Phillips is dead. He died "peacefully in his sleep" on Tuesday at the age of 98, according to his agent.

Phillips began appearing in films as a boy in the 1930s.

However, he only became known when he was over 30 with the "Carry-On" series, whose films in Germany were called "Ist ja irr".

In later years he starred alongside Robert Reford and Meryl Streep in Out of Africa and Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun.

In "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" he appeared as a friend of Lara Croft's (Angelina Jolie) father.

Phillips could also be heard in the Harry Potter films: he lent his voice to the Sorting Hat.
