“Reading Challenge” .. Turning the challenges of the Arabic language into golden opportunities

When His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the "Arab Reading Challenge" initiative, the largest Arab project, in the 2015-2016 academic year, the initiative came at a time when the Arabic language is facing great challenges at all levels. All, Arabic content constitutes from 1 to 3% of the total content available globally, and the Arabic language needs practical initiatives that support building a comprehensive reading movement, and reading is declining to be replaced by the rapid consumption of visual digital content on digital platforms.

The “Arab Reading Challenge” came to explore the reality of education, the tools and prospects of knowledge production in the Arab world, and the difficulties, obstacles and challenges facing the language of Dhad, with extreme accuracy, and revives the passion for science, interest in acquiring knowledge, and acquaintance with sciences, literature, cultures and peoples, achieving and still unique qualitative achievements. It contributes to the rehabilitation of young people and the preparation of Arab generations that are proud of their abilities and capabilities, and are open to the wider world, thanks to their rooted identity, extensive knowledge and complete personality.

And between the first and sixth editions of the largest reading challenge of its kind in Arabic, the number of students participating in it increased by 536%, which reflects the growing importance of the challenge in instilling a love of reading in the Arabic language.

Over the past six seasons, the “Arab Reading Challenge” drew an ascending line, which was not deterred by the “Covid-19” pandemic, nor the waves of mass migration towards digital visual platforms, and was able with the endless support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the dedication of the work team. Restoring the momentum for reading and reading in the Arabic language, and renewing and igniting the great enthusiasm and passion of Arab students for reading from all academic levels.

Six years of efforts turned obstacles into golden opportunities, and the challenge broke through sayings that established strong enmity between reading and the Arab generations, especially the young. They were not able to access useful content in the language of the dhad.

At a time when the first session witnessed the participation of about three and a half million students from various Arab countries, this number jumped in the second session to exceed the barrier of seven million participation, while the number of participants in the third session reached 10 million, after the challenge took a global character.

The number of participants in the fourth edition increased to 13 million, while the challenge in its fifth session attracted about 21 million participants, until the sixth session, the largest in the history of the challenge, registered more than 22.27 million students from 44 countries.
