To be exhibited at her family's embalming exhibition, an American nurse cuts off the leg of a dying patient without his permission

A nurse in Wisconsin is facing criminal charges after amputating a dying patient's foot without his permission or medical need.

Mary Brown, 38, a former nurse who was responsible for the victim's care at the Spring Valley Health and Rehab Center in Spring Valley, is charged with physically assaulting an elderly person, causing significant bodily harm, according to a criminal complaint reviewed by local news agency WQOW.

The dying patient, who was in Brown's care, had severe "frostbite" on both feet and was admitted to the medical center in March 2022, and is believed to be close to death at the end of May, according to the source.

Brown admitted to police officials that she had amputated the patient's foot to rest him, telling police that this was what she would have wanted if she had been in his place.

The nurse said about the amputation that the patient held her hand tightly while moaning during the amputation, according to the local news agency.

Another nurse who spoke with the patient after the operation said he told her the amputation was painful and that he felt everything during the operation.

According to the nurse who testified against Brown, she had stated that her family had a embalming exhibition, and that she intended to preserve the foot and display it with a sign that read: "Put your shoes on, children."

For his part, the director of the medical center where the incident occurred, Kevin Larson, said that Brown no longer works at the facility.

"We have cooperated and will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation into this matter, and the specific person is not our employee," he added.

Brown has been charged with physical abuse of an elderly person and intentionally causing bodily harm.

She is expected to appear in court on December 6, and if convicted, each charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
