Last Tuesday, the body of a woman was discovered on the Rögnitz in the Lower Saxony municipality of Amt Neuhaus.

According to the police, this is a woman from Lübtheen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania who has been missing since September 8th.

The police also found her dachshund, who had stayed with his dead owner for around seven weeks.

The 78-year-old woman was on her way back from the vet on the day she disappeared.

Since she hadn't lived in Lübtheen for long, she must have lost her bearings, according to the police.

When she was out and about, she had repeatedly been in contact with relatives via her mobile phone, whereby, according to media reports, she had given contradictory information about her whereabouts and seemed panicked.

The connection was then broken off at some point because the battery of her mobile phone was empty.

As a police spokesman said on Monday when asked by the FAZ, the police then started an extensive search with helicopters and a rescue dog squadron.

250 volunteers are said to have participated in the search for the woman.

The search was unsuccessful.

The evaluation of the mobile phone data of the missing person did not reveal any clues either.

54 days after the woman's disappearance, workers have now found the badly decomposed corpse of the missing person.

According to the police, the woman was carrying papers that enabled her to be identified quickly.

The cause of death is not yet clear, but the police rule out third-party negligence.

It is unclear how many days the woman died after her disappearance.

According to the police, the dachshund was in good health.

The police could not say what he had eaten for seven weeks and was not relevant to the investigation, said the police spokesman.

The dog was handed over to the woman's family.
