China bans celebrities whose "morals have fallen" from submitting ads

The Chinese authorities have banned celebrities whose "morals have fallen", as described by the Guardian newspaper, and who have been involved in tax evasion, drug and alcohol addiction, fraud and others, from submitting ads.

The authorities banned the promotion of products, including those related to health and education, as part of an ongoing campaign to align society with "basic socialist values".

According to the Guardian, the new regulatory move is the latest in the world of China's entertainment industry, where celebrities have been blacklisted.

The decision also prohibits companies from hiring celebrities who are found to be "immoral" or have engaged in illegal conduct, including tax evasion, drug addiction and fraud.

The authorities said they are seeking to ensure that Chinese society is "guided by Xi Jinping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era," a reference to the overarching ideology underpinning Xi's Communist Party rule.
